Tomkins, Miss Margaret, Anchoria, Exeter Road, Exmouth

Margaret Eleanor Tomkins (1861-1928)was born in Peckham, London in February 1861. Her father Benjamin Albin John Tomkins worked for East India Merchants.[1] Her father died in 1884, aged 61, and after that she and her mother lived in Kensington and then with her brother (director of a tea company) and family in Surbiton.

It was in 1906 that she and her 80-year old mother moved to Exmouth and lived for two years at Drumray, Louisa Terrace next door to Exmouth Suffrage Society member Mrs Donne (at Merrifield). After her mother’s death Margaret moved to Anchoria, Exeter Road where she was recorded in the 1911 census.

She was a committee member of the Exmouth NUWSS[2] but her contribution to the suffrage campaign has not been recorded in newspaper reports. She was an active member of Withycombe church and donated gifts to Exmouth Cottage Hospital and Withycombe Village Institute.[3]  She died 16 January 1928 at High Standing Drakes Avenue Exmouth.[4]
