An Exeter historian known for not shying away from sensitive topics has discovered a surprising link between Exeter and the golliwog while researching what is believed to be the first historical examination of the black fictional character which has became a symbol of racism.
Dr Todd Gray was prompted to delve into its history following the discovery of an unknown Great War variant of the golliwog called the Waterwog. It was created in 1914 in Exeter as a bathtime toy and made out of loofah.
