Clayhidon History Group has been established for over 40 years and meets monthly including 8 speaker events. We try to focus on local history as we have a comprehensive archive of historical research and document collections. Talks include some national/international history subjects although West Somerset and East Devon largely defines boundaries of interest.
File collections are divided into properties, families and subjects. The extensive photographic archive (both paper and digitised) is similarly organised. The oldest image dates from the 1850s and all have been enhanced and researched with captions. All talks and speakers since 1984 have been comprehensively recorded in two minute books. Monthly news sheets containing details of talks an articles produced between 1984 and 2014 have been digitised and indexed by subject and key word for rapid search.
We meet in a small Grade two-listed church room which limits our membership to 20 people but the Group is remarkable for its invaluable history resources, longevity and beautiful farmland parish. The membership includes people from Wellington, Somerset and Hemyock, Devon, separated as they are by the dramatic northern escarpment of the Blackdown Hills.
