Babbacombe and St Marychurch Local History Society

Our Local History Society was started in September 2004 with the aim of furthering interest in the local history of St Marychurch and Babbacombe and to encourage participation in research to publish articles and pamphlets so that the history of the area is recorded.  In conjunction with the Friends of St Anne’s Hall we are endeavouring to produce an archive of the area consisting of photos, memorabilia and recording memories from local inhabitants.

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, from September to April at 19:30 at St Anne’s Hall in Babbacombe.  There is usually a talk by a local historian with a question and answer session, followed by coffee and tea when members are encouraged to socialise.  There is no charge for members, and non members are charged £3.00.

Other social activities take place during the summer months and we organise guided historical walks around Babbacombe and St Marychurch to encourage visitors and locals to learn about the history and appreciate the beautiful area we live in.  These walks take place from July to September on a Tuesday at 10:30 starting alongside the Cliff Railway Cafe on Babbacombe Downs, and they last approximately an hour and a half.  We do not make a charge for these walks, however any donations are appreciated.
