Lake, Miss Bertha, 5 St Aubyn Villas, Tiverton, later Brooklands, Tiverton

Bertha Lake (1884 – 1944)was born in Puddington, Tiverton in 1884 to Thomas and Sarah Lake. Thomas and Sarah had five children of whom only two survived, Bertha and her younger sister Dora. Bertha never married and lived at home with her parents until they died.[1]

Bertha’s father Thomas was a farmer, Mayor of Tiverton and a Magistrate. Retiring from office in 1911.[2] Thomas was a member of the Liberal Party[3]29/4/03 and both he, Sarah (one- time vice president of the Devon Branch)[4] and Bertha were active supporters of the local branch of the Women’s Liberal Association -committed to women’s suffrage.

Bertha’s name appears regularly in local reports of events in aid of NUWSS and the Women’s Liberal Association where she is in attendance or taking part in concerts. [5] Bertha represented the Tiverton branch at the SW Federation of NUWSS[6]. Bertha also represented the branch in discussions with the Conservative and Unionist Women’s Association[7] and was referred to as Branch Secretary[8].

Little else is known about Bertha’s activities. Bertha died in 1944 at the Windermere Nursing Home in Paignton.
