The lives of Richard Stitson (1786-1829) and his wife Mary (nee Currey) (born 1789, died after 1861) are well-documented especially as Richard was the subject of a Wembury Settlement Examination in 1824: a document that gives details of his life and travels, but also holds the threat of removal from the parish. This record however cannot be fully understood without contextual knowledge of Mary’s complex extended family. There are some unexpected links to other parts of the country and evidence of movement into Plymouth’s Dock settlement at the time of war.
