Daw, Miss Winifred

Daw, Miss Winifred, 5 Louisa Terrace, Exmouth

Winfred Mabel Daw (1800–1956)was born in Exeter and lived there, in St Leonards, until 1902 when she moved to Exmouth. Her father Mr R M M Daw was at one time mayor of Exeter and for many years Registrar at Exeter County Court;[1] her brother, with whom she was living in Exmouth in 1911, evidently also took on this role. The census notes that they were living with two servants in a spacious (14 rooms) house at 5 Louisa Terrace.

Before Winifred’s move to Exmouth she had responsibilities in several charitable organisations – the Girls’ Recreation Club, the RSPCA and the NSPCC. It seems that in Exmouth she expanded her involvement in local organisations; the Ministering Children’s League, St Andrew’s Church and Exmouth Cottage Hospital.[2] She was active in the Exmouth Red Cross Society and was at the preliminary discussions for forming a VAD detachment in Exmouth.[3] She was a member of the Exmouth Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club[4] where she would have met up with fellow members of the Exmouth NUWSS. Alongside them she was a committee member of the Exmouth branch of NUWSS which was formed in 1912 and in 1916 she was treasurer.[5] She attended their meeting in June 1912 at All Saints Exmouth where the speaker was Miss Frances Sterling from the executive committee of the NUWSS.[6] She also took part in the fund raising event for the South Western Federation of NUWSS (Fete and Forest of Christmas Trees) in Exeter on 28 November 1913.

At some point she moved to Deepway, Exminster, where she died on 23 March 1956.[7]
