Exeter Cathedral, The First Thousand Years

From the Exeter Express & Echo: The professor in the swim about the cathedral. Professor Nicholas Orme talks about the cathedral and the background to his new book Exeter Cathedral The First Thousand Years, c.400-1550 (Impress Books, ISBN: 978 0 9556239 8 1).

Published with the support of the Friends of Exeter Cathedral, Devon County Council and Exeter City Council, it does exactly what it says on the cover, but is written not for the ecclesiastical scholar but the general reader. It chronicles the religious and social history of the buildings that have stood on the city-centre site since Roman times.

It follows the church's origins, surroundings and its buildings, but it looks also at its wealth, its clergy and the people who live cheek by jowl with what is, and always has been, the jewel in Exeter's crown.
